Topic: W7 updates

Anyone else end up with a blank task bar after today's updates?  Only took a minute to put things back but MS should have noticed something that glaring.

I didn't install KB971033

Re: W7 updates

You install updates on the day they're released?

Some lessons are harder than others I guess.

Re: W7 updates

Seriously. I'm usually way behind on MS patches for just this reason.

I hope that everyone who uses msie clicks on this one.

Link gives you the option to turn the fix on or off.

Re: W7 updates

Actually I'm running WinXP & FF3.6 on my personal computer.  My work laptop is the Win2k/IE6 machine due to a couple factors.  To say my employer is risk adverse is an understatement, they buy 3 year warranties on all hardware and budgets are extremely tight right now.  The only way I get a replacement laptop is if this one fails, and alas, I take good care of my laptop.

Seabird!
Yes, Boss?
We've been hacked!
Oh...
Why haven't you done updates in two weeks?

Re: W7 updates

Um... More like:

Seabird?
Yeah, boss?
Did you load this new patch on my machine?
Yes, boss.
When did it come out?
Yesterday.
Did you bother to test it or research any possible issues related the patch first?
No, boss. I thought the risk of getting hacked was greater.
Now my Task Bar is blank, and I can't seem to break past the firewall to the Internet cloud.
*me typing*
Sorry boss, looks like others are reporting that too.
Go home, Seabird.

Veritas - I challenge you to find me a single professional enterprise that loads brand new patches and hotfixes into its production environment the day they are released by MS. I'm sure they're out there, but it's not a very good support model.

Re: W7 updates

We do Windows patches 1 to 2 weeks after approving on our test desktops/servers. It's not an extremely in-depth test cycle, just a quick check to make sure the core apps run correctly. I'm not sure that blank task bars would count as something we're worried about, but there are no W7 machines here yet.

The other side of this is that both my manager, and the VP of IT get security advisories from our IDS vendor. If a particular patch peaks their interest it turns from test, then deploy to DEPLOY NOW!!! DEPLOY NOW!!! DON'T TEST JUST DEPLOY!!! PATCH THE VULNERABILITY!! WHAT'S THE STATUS OF THE PATCH!!!???

Actually, they're like that with a lot of things... yikes

People still program stuff for the 64, you should see some of their forums.

I still have some C64 hardware, but I threw out 2 64' consoles since they no longer worked. I still have a monitor, 2 disk drives, bunch of games, power supplies etc.

It's easier to just download the bittorrent with the 10,000 games.

Re: W7 updates

How big is your environment, Charlie? A few hundred machines means a seat of the pants rollback isn't too much to get sweaty over. Forty-fifty thousand machines is a whole 'nother thing...

Heh, I never had a C64, my first computer was a TRS-80 (Trash-80) Model I Level I with a blazing 4k of screaming RAM and tape cassette drive.  Then I moved on to an Apple IIe from there.  The former was about $500 (in 1980 dollars) and the Apple was a solid $3000 that I spent entire teenage summers paying off.  But hey, it had a 300 baud modem!!!!11!1!

As to your second point, I recently downloaded DosBox and replayed all the old TSR D&D games from back in the day.  Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secret of the Silver Blades and Pools of Darkness.  Mostly because of a forum where they were being discussed and everyone talking about how unbelievably difficult they were to beat compared to modern games.  Good times.

As for the actual topic, my new machine has just warned me that it'll be downloading the patches at 3am tonight.  Sigh.

Gotta say though, I'm really surprised by how much I like Win 7.  I absolutely refused to migrate from XP for quite a while there, but the recent changeover has been largely positive.  Microsoft has actually redeemed themselves somewhat in my eyes.

"Your employer, it's estimated, would see premiums fall by as much as 3,000 percent, which means they could give you a raise." - Barack Obama, on why you should love Obamacare.

Re: W7 updates

Related yet unrelated and not quite new topic worthy: anyone try W7 under boot camp?

My system stats are 2ghz Core 2 Duo, 2GB Mem, plenty of HD space.

Re: W7 updates

Not really a Macintologist, but I thought that Bootcamp would only work with XP. At least that's what my limited research made me believe when I set it up for my wife on her Macbook.

Their IT kung-fu is most definitely not strong.
