Can I get a "niggah please" from all the people who know that if it had been Gov. Palin (D) instead of Gov. Palin (R) that she would have been PROUD of her for bringing her baby in public?

It is wrong of you to use a retarded baby to draw a political inference.

Re: Sarah Palin's cheat sheet

I'm not a "fan" of Palin, really, but the ridiculous things she is harangued for, from both the left and the right, force me to defend her more than I'd otherwise care to.

I'm bothered by the fact that she's supporting McCain over a more conservative candidate in AZ, and I think there was a similar situation in one other place.  That makes me want to keep an eye on her.  But every time I hear someone (from left or right) insult her intelligence or education because they watched a few minutes of the incredibly edited interviews with Gibson or Couric - seriously, when Gibson asked Palin about Russia, they edited out her first three complete paragraphs and made her fourth paragraph her entire response -  it invariably makes me want to *severely* beat the shit out of someone, and it ain't Palin.

I love Palin, because she causes Palin Derangement Syndrome, just a regular ole conservative white Christian woman from backwoods America.  She reveals reams about here attackers and those who dislike her.

This article in Commentary Mag was fantastic.  I think there is some fair criticism of the article to be made, but doing to the Left what is constantly done to the right and having them go ballistic is sheer joy!

Re: Sarah Palin's cheat sheet

Qwinn, I agree 100%. Most of the things she is derided for are utterly ridiculous and I feel obligated to defend her as well. The things that do cause me a bit of concern is that she doesn't seemed to be heavily vetted on sensitive matters and "speaks off the cuff" on complex issues a tad much. While her comments are typically to rile up her base with harmless quips and oft-retaliatory soundbites, the Iran comment was a bit dicey. Whether we think about it much or not, she was the nominee for VP of the US and her words carry worldwide weight (and thus potential ramifications). She can still say those same things but be a little more sly about it. "Diplomacy" or "PC" is what they call it I believe. big_smile

What was her Iran comment?  I managed to miss it.

Holy shit. Disregard. I've been duped by the context police. I went to look for it and found the entire exchange. Here's the text:

Fox Sunday wrote:

WALLACE: How hard do you think President Obama will be to defeat in 2012?

PALIN: It depends on a few things. Say he played—and I got this from Buchanan, reading one of his columns the other day - say he played the war card. Say he decided to declare war on Iran or decided really [to] come out and do whatever he could to support Israel, which I would like him to do, but - that changes the dynamics in what we can assume is going to happen between now and three years. Because I think if the election were today I do not think Obama would be re-elected. But three years from now, things could change if — on the national security front . . .

WALLACE: But you’re not suggesting that he would cynically play the war card?

PALIN: I’m not suggesting that. I’m saying if he did, things would dramatically change. If he decided to toughen up and do all that he can to secure our nation and our allies, I think people would, perhaps, shift their thinking a little bit and decide, “Well, maybe he’s tougher than we think he’s—than he is today,” and there wouldn’t be as much passion to make sure that he doesn’t serve another four years.

Sounds reasonable to me.

Oh, right, yes, I'd read that bit (in full context).  What were you duped into thinking was wrong with it?

Many on the left and the "establishment" right insinuated that she was being diplomatically insensitive, politically naive, and even hawking Iran. I swear, I just need to stop watching the news and read transcripts.

Edit - therefore, the only thing I stand by in my initial post is "she doesn't seemed to be heavily vetted on sensitive matters and "speaks off the cuff" on complex issues a tad much". But I will certainly give her more latitude from here on out.

While I can't gauge what her intelligence really is in person, I've found most of her public speaking atrocious. Sure, the CBS interview was edited. But her resignation speech, the vp debate (not that Biden isn't a gaffe machine too), and the presentation to which we are now referring are all perfect examples of situations in which she came off as less-than-savvy, to say the least. If you watched the full speech she gave at the National Tea Party convention (particularly the q&a section) -- she LOOKED DIRECTLY AT HER HAND while answering a question. Literally mumbled some random filler words while she looked at her hand, like a kid cheating on an exam, then proceeded to say a sentence that included the catch phrase. It was terrible. There is nothing in a presentation like that which suggests she is ready to operate at the political level to which she aspires. Watching her speak in situations which require her to think on her feet, without rehearsed lines, is painful. She really does resemble Miss South Carolina in that regard.

She might be better in person, or as an executive (after all, she was very popular as governor of Alaska); but she certainly doesn't come off as a convincingly astute political mind in anything I've seen publicly.

This has nothing to do with my opinion of her ideas. She's really just not in the same class (yet) as some of the better conservative minds out there, whether it be Geingrich (sp?), Kristol, Sowell, or others.

The fargo accented "Ya! You betcha!"hokeyness wears thin.  Unfortunately, it appears genuine.

The resignation speech was horrible.  It was as if she had written it herself, or had no prepared remarks at all.

Perhaps she was not trying to conceal anything.

Sexist.  BHO is also an awful speaker off-the-cuff, but you don't read about him being compared to Miss SC.

That's very unfair.  GWB, his father, WJC, BHO, Gore -- none of the top tier politically are comparable to those you mention.  Steve Forbes is probably closest to that sort.

She's terrible, but I love how hysterical she makes some people. She has an amazing ability to make people on the left drop their mask or to bring out in them all the ugly things they don't know they actually believe.

Oh ya.  She's just a hard workin' maverick, doncha know!

Re: Sarah Palin's cheat sheet

My favorite trick of hers is the way she trots out the well rehearsed talking point during an interview, and then when the interviewer asks her to elaborate and tries to go a little bit deeper into the issue she gets a deer in the headlights look and then just repeats her original talking point almost verbatim to the original answer she gave.

Watching President Obama off teleprompter is akin to a kid giving his first speech in grade school who lost his note cards.  In fact at that level I had a teacher who had us do exercises to remove "um" and "Uhh" from our speaking.  (this included the entire class shouting "UMM!" or "UHHH" or "like" or "Y'know" back at the speaker if they inserted them as crutches.)  Such a "gifted" speaker as Obama should not pepper his remarks so heavily with space-filler words.  Yet among the faithful he is still considered a brilliant orator.  I bet he reads the fuck out of a bedtime story too, but that doesn't make him a great storyteller.

I consider it wise to have notes keeping you on message when giving a speech.  I am not by any means defending Palin as a speaker - I cringe regularly when I hear her speak.  I am critical of the over the top reaction to any small thing she does or says - in this case making and referring to notes when the hero of most leveling the charges couldn't recite Jack and Jill without his teleprompter.

But.....but.....he's so dumb he couldn't even pronounce "nuclear"

"Navy corpse-man (sic), Christian...."

"...woman asked Christopher..." (is it Christian or Christopher?  It's been nearly 7 seconds since I last mentioned him!)

"...in Creole, corpse-man Bouchard..."

I think GWB had outstanding speech writers. Much of the wordsmithing and distillation of ideas in his addresses was first rate. GWB did a serviceable job delivering prepared texts. In interviews and press conferences he was impressively awful.

No need to be lemony about his wordsmithitude.  The effectifying trait of his homey ramblerity was a clear communicatification messagery, even if you had a dislikery of it.

The Golden one could use perfect construction, but still communicate nothing clearly.
