Rocketman and the Cheeto: BFFs?

So, thoughts on the summit? No handshake shenanigans by Trump, which surprised me.

  • I think that the fat kid is neither crazy nor stupid.

His country is going to literally run out of cash reserves this year, his nuclear program is effectively at a dead end because they basically blew up their test facility, the sanctions are crippling and China long ago decided that if it ever had to choose between propping up NK and pursuing it's larger goals that NK was going under the bus faster than it's leader goes through a buffet.

If NK gives up a nuclear program that is only becoming less useful as time goes on, it can ask for the moon.

And don't for a minute think the fat kid doesn't know that.
  • It's just a piece of paper, but it's a necessary element to getting the last stalinists to give up.  I'll be impressed when the north goes about digging up its landmines in the DMZ.

    Still, DJT did it.
  • I just looked in on DU to see how they were reacting.

Apparently Trump betrayed America on behalf of his Russian and Chinese masters.

    Of course.

    & don't forget RUSSIA PROBE!

  • By the way, great thread title, Dave.

    Could be a sitcom.

    What’s “it?”

Bob Corker says he has “no idea” whether Trump secured anything of substance.

What are you going to tell yourself when cabinet, and perhaps family members are convicted?
  • When it if?

You know... it.  Its basically what Obama did to win his Peace Prize.  How long before Trump gets his prize?

Obama got his prize for making the western world feel good about ourselves while increasing drone strikes.

Since DJT makes the western world feel bad, I imagine he’ll actually have to accomplish something of substance to win.
  • That was supposed to say "when or if?"

Kindles don't do well with this websites software.

  • You know that they’re going to get even crazier now, right?

It’s the only defense they have against the blowback from their prior craziness.

William Barr: Mueller clears Trump in Russia probe
Special counsel Robert Mueller found no evidence that anyone connected with President Trump or his 2016 campaign conspired with Russia to subvert the election, according to a summary of his findings released Sunday by Attorney General William Barr.

  • How do you like that final “fuck you” that Mueller threw at him?

It's mild and Barr explains why an obstruction charge can't work.

The beauty is that this leaves enough for dead enders to complain about.  When Tool decides that enough people have forgotten erroneous his ideas of this episode were, you may see him come back to claim that Mueller's report isn't the last word on conspiracy or obstruction.  That sort of complaint will serve as a shibboleth by which the loons will self-segregate.
  • Of course it can’t work. There’s no underlying crime, a President can’t be punished for exercising his legitimate Article II powers and the fact that the probe went on for two years AFTER Comey was fired is prima facie evidence that nothing was obstructed.

I meant in terms of the “not exonerated” comment giving Democrats an excuse to keep complaining.

Prosecutors don't exonerate targets.  Therefore, "Mueller didn't exonerate DJT" can't be a substantive comment on the report.  Ferdinand Piech also didn't exonerate DJT, but then that was never Piech's job.

I once had an insurance company ask me to get a letter from a prosecutor clearing my client of the murder of her husband before they would pay.  They didn't like "prosecutors aren't going to do that" as my answer, even though they knew was correct.
  • I get that but he didn’t have to put that sentence in there because most people are not going to understand.

Mueller didn't put that in Barr's letter.  Barr decided to quote it.  I don't attribute to Barr an intent to leave some people a bit of rope.

The list of things most people aren't going to understand is pretty long.  I wouldn't worry about it much.

This "Russian collusion" episode is exactly the opposite of the Clinton impeachment.  The Clinton impeachment began with Jennifer Flowers admitting the nature of her job duties, then harassment and rape allegations, then Paula Jones suing and overcoming WJC risible soldiers and sailors defense, WJC paying Paula Jones, then the nailing of WJC for perjury and impeaching him.  The foundation was built and in terms of publicity the impeachment trial was the denouement.  Thereafter, repubs forgot how to say "impeachment".

This "Russian collusion" episode began its public life with the weeping crowds and cables news people in the throes of incredible tantrums.  Then those who were present for investigative misbehavior leaked bits of their misbehavior as a foundation for further investigation, an investigation that culminated in no indictments related to the charge and this "no action" letter.

Yet, will dems be able to move on?  Nadler has signaled that they can't.  First they lost the election, then they lost the independent investigation, now they are going back for thirds.  I doubt it will help them in 2020.

That is exactly what Richard Blumenthal did on NPR this morning.

It's too bad this letter came out during an NPR fund raising drive.  You may see any number of errors from their commentariat as they try to square the substance of Barr's letter with their certainty that DJT is Bad, does Bad Things, and should be treated Badly.

Mueller didn't make that line public though; Barr did.
