The State of The Union -sucks

This country is so messed up.

In the past few days we have had two funerals. One of an entertainer with a questionable past, but [i:3tqo3axs]just[/i:3tqo3axs] an entertainer all the same that caused all major networks to cover the services. The other of a sports figure and adulterer, 4,500 turned out.

If this doesn't make you sick...

Check the online TV guides for July 19, the Eve and July 20, The Day, and see what is being done in honor of one of mankind's greatest achievements.

Now you can throw up.

• I'm not even sure the filming of that "landing" even happened on the 20th. I'm pretty sure the sound stage was busy that day for an episode of "leave it to beaver" or something.
• Can somebody clue me in? I don't watch TV. The entertainer is Michael Jackson. Who is the sports figure?

What is one of mankind's greatest achievements? Landing on the moon on July 20, 1969? Is this...not being covered? Oh my. I just realized it's been 40 years! I was born on the 20th.

By the title, I thought it was about Obama :)

• Would you really put the lunar landing up as mankind's greatest achievement? I'd put the discovery of the New World, the Haber process, flight, and maybe several others up ahead. Landing on the moon has borne (born?) little fruit. Maybe time will prove me wrong. But it's shameful how little we've advanced in 40 years.

Most of that is politics, I believe. We could have been on Mars ten years ago[/url:yzzfi48c] with 20-year-old technology. And now we're going to Luna again?!

Some of your differences in opinion stem from weighing [i:yzzfi48c]advancements[/i:yzzfi48c] with [i:yzzfi48c]icons[/i:yzzfi48c]. Despite that, I think the Space Race [i:yzzfi48c]did[/i:yzzfi48c] infuse a lot of technology into our world. After all, think of how much infrastructure is supported by space platforms[/url:yzzfi48c].

I think that we fail to connect every day stuff with the lunar landing (and space flight in general), but there are connections, and they are real and valuable to society. Whether they represent a larger contribution to mankind than the discovery of the New World is questionable, but that there has been world-changing progress made that effects almost every life on the plant because of the lunar landings is not.

I wrote a piece (before blogs) about a typical American citizen's day where I involked as much lunar technology passed to the people as I could. IIRC I had somewhere around 100 items that we now use almost every day that are directly or indirectly a result of the space program.

As a simple bullet point list (and there is likely as much left off as included) might go something like this:

Memory foam mattress
LED alarm clock w/ projection time on ceiling -- updates via atomic clock/satellite w/digital CD player
Flat screen cable television utilizing satellite beamed broadcasts over fiber optic network in HD format
Freeze-dried instant coffee and high protien breakfast bar
Ultrasonic toothbrush
Velcro
Remote home lighting/LED lighting
Computer-controlled automobile
RADAR speed control
Ergoniomic office chair w/memory foam seat
PC w/cable or T1 modem
1 TB hard drive
Digital phone system
Laser printer
LCD or cathode scanner
128 bit encryption
Digital photos and on-line storage
Pen that writes at any angle
Sound system w/wireless speakers -- XM/Sirus capable
Weather.com (or similar)
Microwave oven
Hand-held calculator
Smart phone/w wi-fi, bluetooth
Bluetooth earpiece
Electronic journals via Kindle or similar
Web
Electronic blood-pressure measuring device
MRI and other image generating devices
Ultrasonic dentistry
Digital electronic scale (strain guage)
Digital-control heat and cooling system
Magnetic strips on credit cards w/readers and pass-by scanners
DVD recorder/player
Big screen television w/250+ channels
Powered massage chair
Freeze-dried or otherwise processed food -- instant food in a pouch/bag, etc.

I think FIRE rates up at the top, way up at the top.

• I agree that the moon landing was our greatest achievement to date, yes.

And the fact that we stopped there our biggest shame.
